Hedge Fund Overview
t Stella Artois, we look back to a time when a hedge fund was just that – a fund to create hedges. Along which couples could stroll, swinging a picnic hamper, listening to birdsong and laughing.
That’s why, every time you buy a case of Stella Artois, we’ll invest in our hedge fund, to plant hedges all over the British countryside.
Cutting the Hedges
How it works
ou buy a pack of ‘Hedge Fund’ Stella Artois. To say thank you, we grow a hedge which, when it is fully established, will be 0.04m3 (see fig.1). Voila! Nothing to it.
A Stella Artois 18x284ml pack will fund a hedge that will grow 3 times the size of that pack or in other words 0.04m3.
That means 75 packs will fund 1 meters of a fully grown hedge of 2 meters height and 1.5 meters width.

What you do
To help our Hedge Fund, you simply need to buy special ‘Hedge Fund’ packs of Stella Artois. Perhaps to enjoy during a picnic, sharing canapés and witty repartee with friends. Or at a barbecue, nonchalantly grilling steaks as guests look on in wide-eyed admiration. Just remember to recycle those bottles!
What we do
We will grow hedges, wherever they are most needed. Over the next two years we plan to fund over 365,000 hedge saplings and 8,650 trees saplings, to be planted in the British countryside. And they’ll be carefully looked after by volunteers, to keep them spruce and bursting with wildlife.
Why hedges
edges have been called Britain’s largest nature reserve – a reserve 506,000 miles long. They are very important for plants and animals, and they also help
the soil and water supply of fields. Just think, without hedgerows there might not have been crops for our hops, barley and maize. And no Stella Artois.

Environmental Benefit
Peak District, Derbyshire, United Kingdom
ildlife is wild about hedges. Butterflies love them – those warm and sheltered conditions help them gain and retain the heat they need to fly. And hedges give a home to hundreds more species, including several European Protected Species like dormice and the Greater Horseshoe and Barbastelle bats.
Sadly, most of the UK’s hedgerows are looking a little shabby, putting this wildlife at risk. In 2006, only 22% of British hedgerows were believed to be in good condition. We hope our hedge fund can help our hedges once again look splendid, as they grow and mature over the years.
Hedgerows stop soil being lost from fields. How? By reducing wind erosion and acting as a barrier to water-borne run off. Hedges also regulate the water supply to crops, helping to keep water in fields and prevent flooding.
Hedgerows also absorb CO2. We know offsetting isn't a quick fix to reducing environmental impact, but it still helps, and every year, one mile of hedgerow will absorb 1 tonne of CO2.
For all these reasons, we at Stella Artois say: Vive le Hedge Fund!
